About SMA & TAGS

The Society of Music Analysis (SMA) is the UK’s leading organisation dedicated to music theory and analysis. Its annual two-day Theory and Analysis Graduate Students Conference  (TAGS) provides a supportive and friendly environment in which postgraduates can gain experience in presenting their work and meet fellow researchers. As School of Music at Bangor University, we are proud to host the student conference in 2017. Some sessions are also part of the Bangor Music Festival. For full details, see Festival Programme.

At TAGS, we welcome interests in all musical repertoires and cultures and promote music theory and analysis in the broadest sense, including formal and critical theory, aesthetics, semiotics, music psychology, cognitive science, and music technology. Speakers at TAGS, who also hold SMA student membership, may apply for SMA Student Travel Bursaries. For SMA membership, please find more details here.

Participation at TAGS 2017 is free of charge, but registration is required. You can join us for the both conference days, or individual days.
